'how to arrange rubik's cube' is an ongoing research project by David Addison stemming from the initial question: which two pieces of music would you like played at your funeral?
Submissions will be compiled and aim to inform a visual art project in 2018. Possible outcomes include a public exhibition, critical text(s), digital archive, printed publication or presentation within an audio format.
Please share with anyone you feel may be interested or benefit in somehow from tackling the question. A varied dataset of ages, locations, gender and cultural identities will help realise a more fully formed response and critical understanding. If you would like to discuss any aspects of the project in further detail then please get in touch at firstname.lastname@example.org
All submissions can be made anonymously, if contact details are provided then any personal data will be stored securely and if presented publically you will be consulted for consent before any distinguising information is released in a public facing format.
A 'song' here is defined as any piece of recorded music or other composition of sound, instrumental or otherwise. Please supply the performer(s) of your chosen version of the piece rather than original writer if different.
You may have to repeat the step a few times until there is a cross. so none of the 3 options given apply.. is there anyway to get the green on the bottom or would that just mess everything up? To move a piece into position, rotate the cube about its vertical axis, so that the intended location is the FR location. Anyway, once the cynical onlookers have gone away, you are ready to dismantle your cube. I’ve have changed my cube so that the red is where the green is supposed to be and have completed the side but i cant get the t’s to show HELP! Some people started thinking about how to complete the Rubik’s Cube back in the 80’s, and in 40 years have got little further than one side. Wouldn’t it be easier on the last possibility to rotate the right face twice? Please I really need help ;(. I had been able to solve the Rubik’s cube before I bought these three ones, but at that time my record (3x3x3 ) was 1 minute … Choose the picture that matches your scenario and follow the steps. Works fine here. Don’t worry if the colors of the corner pieces don’t match with their correct sides yet, we’re just making sure that the corner pieces are in the correct spot on the cube. The Rubik’s cube is solved LAYER by LAYER using the following 5 steps: STEP 1 - COMPLETE THE FIRST LAYER CROSS STEP 2 - COMPLETE THE FIRST LAYER CORNERS STEP 3 - COMPLETE SECOND LAYER STEP 4 - COMPLETE THE THIRD LAYER CROSSSTEP 5 - COMPLETE THE THIRD LAYER CORNERS STEP 1 - COMPLETE THE FIRST LAYER CROSS Keep WHITE centre on top Put the GREEN centre piece in front … We will move that top middle piece to the correct spot on the middle row in this step (as shown in the “after” picture). They are usually written with a capital letter denoting the face that should be rotated, a lowercase i if that rotation should be counterclockwise, and a number 2 if it should be rotated twice. You read the top row first from left to right, then the bottom row. The first thing to do is to choose a color that stand out. I have two orange corners at opposite ends. There are 8! HOLDING THE CUBE: Hold the Rubik’s Cube as shown, NOW twist the top face until at least 2 corners are in the right location as A, B or A, D or B, C as shown below. Start a trend and be the first! If it looks like the bottom cube then ONLY do the last two lines of moves. In the “after” picture below this is the blue side. See ya! I dont understand what is it that Im suppose to be repeating? Explain to onlookers that it takes several minutes to take a rubik’s cube apart and put it back together again, but the world record for doing it the ‘proper’ way is about 20 seconds, so there’s no motivation to cheat! Then I studied the pictures again and realized that not only must the “T” be created, but the color of the tile at the bottom of the “T” (on the top surface, surrounded by “white” tiles in the picture) must correspond with the color of the bottom line to the left (or right, depending on what works with your particular combination) of your “T”. thankz Rame. I get going pretty well, with white on the bottom and yellow on the top, however I get to a point in this step when all the edges on the side are yellow, and I don’t know how to fix it. This made it work for me, as I was trying to use all four lines of moves. Hope this helps. Here's an explicit example – the UFL piece needs rotating counter-clockwise, and the UFR piece needs rotating clockwise. You may find yourself stuck on this step, but if-like said before- you twist the top, it may work better. Now all is prepared for the move. if the last step messes the whole thing do it in reverse , I have finished it. Also note that equivalent to this is: F D2 F′ D′ F D F′ (demo): for left-handed people this might make things easier. I had to try it a few times to get it. This less time-consuming sequence will rotate the top center face counter-clockwise (ccw) and the left center face clockwise (cw), each n quarter turns: With different notation, the sequence (n = 1) can be abbreviated (demo): The result is the same when combined with a sequence to rotate the top center face two quarter turns: Left and top center faces are turned one quarter in same sense. So in the example below, I would first get the red/green block in the correct spot (as shown in the “after” picture) then do the yellow piece, then blue, then white. :Green top center, red right center, green front bottom middle, red under bottom green. Note that these U-rotations should be very obvious. Before you begin positioning edge pieces, you should rotate the middle layer so that all of the center pieces are correctly positioned. I don’t know which one is the first step of the move and which one is the second one…, This isn’t working for me after I finish the first line the green and reds on the edge are switched so it goes green green red red instead of green red green red. However, when actually trying to solve the cube quickly, instead of applying U′ in the previous move, look to find the next edge piece that is required to put in the right location. Any ideas? look at the top diagram on the left, instead of having the green showing with the respective color underneath have the respective color showing with green underneath so your cubes starting position should be green on top, respective color right panel, respective color with green underneath. Just keep repeating the same movement again and again until u get it right! and + how would you get to there when you are 2 cubies away from getting the green one. It’s wonderful! Am I doing something wrong or should not be following the step exactly or something? Give it another try. Could someone please further explain how one goes about doing one of these moves in “reverse” ?? ), whenever i do the move the blue piece wont go anywhere. Now apply R′ D2 R D R′ D′ R (demo): Note that what is being done is R′ D2 R to move the white side off the bottom of the cube, so that one of the moves in the previous section can be used. How to Solve the Rubik's Cube in Seven Steps. I too am stuck on this step. After like 4 or 5 times, they both went at once. i got the solution. That might be the biggest mistake people were making. Now the orange, and finally the white. In the example below we bring the red/green piece to match with the red and green sides. the middle layer means turn two sides down next to each other and get the down one back up. (Demo.). 1st Step: Position yellow corners correctly While holding your Rubik’s Cube … can I get some help? If you started with white, these pieces will be colored white-red, white-orange, white-blue and white-green (using a Rubik's brand cube). The move to put the new edge piece into place can only be done if it is on the U slice. Find the spot where the piece should go. I encountered problems at first as well because I wasn’t sure if the color of the tile at the bottom of “T” (top surface of the cube in the picture) mattered. Orange is the R center. 479001600. I had the same issue and this worked for me. Then, apply R′ or B. Make sure you are looking at the picture right i did about 40 revelations or so before i realised i kept turning the cube slightly to the right ever time, all you have to do…is repeat the thingy like 5 times…u dont even need to change positins, What about if I don’t have a blue piece in that position, I have the cross but two edge pieces from the sides are switched, and only two of them are in the right position. Then, rotate U some amount to get the UL piece (Blue-Yellow in the example) back to the right place. I’ve tried starting the cube according to each option above, but when I finish not all the cross is completed. There are 43 quintillion potential ways to arrange the squares but only one solution. (HINT: when performing this step, keep in mind that the front left piece will not move.). Here is an example: Yellow is the F center. how do you rotate the middle of a rubiks cube? I cant seem to get the hang of this. At the end you should only have the green and red touching each other with two squares each. Also make certain that the edge you are trying to move to the middle layer is in the proper location as shown in the images on the left. The top is green but not in 1 spot and that final green one is not on the bottom row, but on the top one DIRECTLY under the spot it needs to go. Apply B U′ B′ U R′ U R U′ (, Both edge pieces (BR and UR) have the same color on the R side of the piece, which is the same color as the R center. Then continue on the other three sides to the left or right of the right side on the diagrahm. By the mid 1980's, an estimated fifth of the world's population had attempted to solve the cube… Do I keep Green on top and rotate the whole cube around the Green-Blue axis (Green on top and Blue on ther bottom, and bring the next side (Yellow) to where the Red was and Orange to where the Yellow was and keep repeating this for all sides? A cube has six sides! Apply B U B′ U B U B′ U2 (, To rotate a piece clockwise, apply L D2 L′ F′ D2 F (, To rotate a piece counter-clockwise, apply F′ D2 F L D2 L′ (. 2.the side panel (on the right) will be the color your working with, and I figured out a better result, (the panel on the left) I fount that if you do the opposite you get the cross like pattern ex. I GOT IT RIGHT AT FIRST GO. Are other people having this same problem? It’s a little confusing. If your cube doesn’t match any of the three starting positions shown below you may need to move some pieces around to get there. one of the corners is in the right place but backwards when i started the step, dosen’t work for me either on last one :/, What do you mean repeating this step for all four sides? My name is Paul – leave a note for me if this helped. How am I supposed to make the T’s? If the white and yellow sides are correct but not the red and orange then face the white towards you and do : right down, top right, right up, top right, right down, top right, top right, right up, right up, top left, right down, top left, right up, top left, top left, right down, top left. So when I do it in reverse it messes everything up. Then rotate the cube and do the yellow just like you did the red. Do the following: To reduce memorization at the expense of some speed, two of these moves suffice. If you have a block in the wrong rotation but correct spot, use this pattern to rotate it out and then use it again to place it back in place, in the right rotation. Congratulations, your cube should now be solved! This move only rotates the front and right corners. The beginning picture has it opposite. I had trouble with this step too. I have it now. corner piece. Its just one, and no matter what i do its the same thing. does the cube have to be set that way in the first picture? I don’t get how I’m supposed to get from the top before picture to the middle before picture? This step should work very easily, and if it doesn’t, use that thing inside your head (the name beats me at this current time…) to work out just this one step, because it is REALLY easy…. All right reserved. This is the only step that requires any actual memorization. Note that it is possible for the "empty" corner piece on the bottom layer to get solved by accident. Three of my blue pieces fit together, but the last one won’t work. Identify the pieces. It‘s okay to have a blue piece in the front right position as well, but the key is to make sure that there is a blue piece on that front left side. There are several ways in which you can solve a Rubik's cube. To continue, simply keep rotating D or D′ and moving the cube to set up the same position, with an "empty" corner in DRF, the intended location at RF, and the piece to move in the U slice. Then, do the sequence below 1X, 2X or 3X or UNTIL it is in the correct position. The only (slight) difference will be a need to rotate U at the end to make up for that. I am able to completely finish one of the sides bot I cannot make the T’s on the other sides. its not working for me either, im having the same problem as them ^^. the middle pieces fall in the right place but then the corner pieces are always stuffed up :/ does this move also solve the corners or only the middle.. The Rubik's cube isn't an impossible puzzle and it can be solved by everyone. You might have scrambled and are looking for a solution (That's why you came here in the first place).Even Ernol Rubik's ,the creator of the puzzle learnt the solution after 1 month so if you are unable to solve it yourself then it's no big problem.. Should I turn it clockwise, counterclockwise, turn my room, or just screw it? After doing this, the top pieces will all be in the correct order but will need to be rotated around the cube until they are on their correct sides. In order to fix the cube, you need to take out the pieces that are not properly in place and put them back so that the cube is fully solved. If the two remaining corner pieces are diametrically opposed (e.g., at UFL and DRB), then apply R2 (in this case) to bring both of them onto the U slice. Or just having a green in center of top side is enough? “All four sides” refers to the four squares adjacent to the cross (as shown in the picture with the red and yellow. People keep asking what doing the move ‘in reverse’ means, and there’s still no explanation. This site helps a lot a lot more than YouTube video but I’m sort of stuck.
